Overview

Food Lover’s Market is looking for a passionate and experienced Cook to join its team in Alberton, Gauteng.

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and cooking food according to required recipes, instructions and quality standards. The role also involves setting up kitchen stations, preparing ingredients, maintaining food safety standards and ensuring meals are produced efficiently and to a consistently high standard.

This opportunity is suitable for candidates with previous experience as a Cook, Chef, Assistant Chef or Back-of-House employee who are comfortable working in a busy food-service environment.

Key Responsibilities

– Set up and stock kitchen stations with all required ingredients and supplies.

– Prepare ingredients for cooking, including chopping vegetables, preparing meat and making sauces.

– Prepare and cook menu items according to recipes and instructions.

– Work closely with other kitchen employees to ensure efficient food production.

– Ensure food is prepared and ready for service on time.

– Maintain consistent food quality, freshness and presentation.

– Assist with plating meals and ensuring dishes are presented attractively.

– Clean and sanitise kitchen stations before, during and after service.

– Properly store leftover food and ingredients.

• Monitor stock and ensure ingredients are stored correctly.
• Assist with kitchen stock control where required.
• Follow Food Lover’s Market food preparation and operational standards.
• Comply with food hygiene, sanitation, nutrition and workplace safety requirements.
• Assist with the setup and organisation of kitchen workstations.
• Follow instructions from the Executive Chef, Sous Chef or relevant supervisor.
• Maintain a professional and positive attitude when working with colleagues and customers.
• Perform additional kitchen duties when reasonably required.

Requirements and Skills

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

• Grade 12 / Matric.
• Previous experience as a Cook, Chef, Assistant Chef or in a Back-of-House role.
• Practical food preparation and cooking experience.
• Understanding of food hygiene and sanitation standards.
• Knowledge of safe food handling and storage practices.
• Ability to follow recipes and preparation instructions.
• Good understanding of food freshness and quality.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced and high-pressure kitchen.
• Good teamwork and communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Good time-management and organisational skills.
• Ability to maintain clean and hygienic work areas.
• Willingness to work different shifts, including Sundays and Public Holidays.
• Clear criminal record.
• Preferably reside within approximately 25 km of the Alberton workplace.

Preferred Candidates

Food Lover’s Market has indicated a preference for:

• South African candidates.
• Candidates between 33 and 45 years old.

These are preferences rather than the essential requirements listed above.
