Job Overview

The General Assistant will be responsible for providing excellent customer service, maintaining merchandising standards, ensuring a clean and safe shopping environment, and assisting with general store operations.

Successful candidates will work closely with customers and colleagues to ensure the store remains fully stocked, organised, and ready to deliver an outstanding shopping experience.


Key Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Welcome and assist customers in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Help customers locate products and answer product-related questions.
  • Resolve customer complaints or refer them to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Deliver excellent customer service at all times.

Merchandising

  • Replenish shelves and merchandise stock according to store layouts.
  • Ensure products are displayed neatly and correctly.
  • Check and maintain accurate shelf pricing.
  • Keep assigned departments fully stocked.

Housekeeping

  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised work area.
  • Ensure aisles remain free from obstacles.
  • Complete housekeeping duties, including canteen and restroom cleaning schedules where required.
  • Unpack and merchandise newly received stock.

Stock Control

  • Report damaged or missing stock to the Store Manager.
  • Help minimise stock losses.
  • Ensure stock is stored safely.

Health and Safety

  • Follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHSA) requirements.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment where required.
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Ensure customers and colleagues can move safely throughout the store.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

Either:

  • Grade 10 (NQF Level 3) plus one (1) year of relevant work experience

OR

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with no previous work experience required

Applicants must also have:

  • Valid South African ID or valid work permit.
  • Ability to communicate in English and the dominant language spoken in the area.
  • Basic numerical skills.
  • Ability to perform simple calculations accurately.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
