Overview

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking General Worker to join its team at the Irene Weather Office. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the maintenance and operation of weather observation facilities that support critical weather and climate services across South Africa.

The successful candidate will assist with maintenance activities, support technical teams, maintain weather stations and office facilities, and help ensure that operational sites remain safe, functional, and compliant with relevant standards.

Key Responsibilities

– Assist with the installation and inspection of remote weather observation sites.

– Repair and maintain structures that house meteorological equipment.

– Perform terrain maintenance, including grass cutting, weeding, and waste removal.

– Clean weather office facilities, including restrooms and common areas.

– Carry out basic building maintenance and repair tasks.

– Monitor and report on company assets and infrastructure.

– Assist with fleet management activities.

– Maintain adequate stock levels for maintenance operations.

– Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

– Attend training and development programmes as required.

– Support exhibitions, presentations, workshops, and public awareness events.

– Assist with educational outreach activities, including school visits.

– Participate in mentoring and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric / NQF Level 4.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Welding, handyman, or maintenance-related training will be advantageous.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to learn and develop additional technical skills.
