The South African Police Service (SAPS) is inviting qualifying former SAPS members to apply for 200 re-enlistment vacancies under the 2026/2027 Re-Enlistment Project.
The recruitment drive is aimed at capacitating Detective Services and is specifically for former SAPS members who previously served at the ranks of Constable, Sergeant or Warrant Officer.
Successful applicants may be required to undergo refresher or other prescribed training. Candidates without formal detective training or experience will undergo three months of training immediately after appointment.

Salary

Who Can Apply?
This recruitment campaign is not a general SAPS entry-level recruitment programme.
It is specifically for former members of the South African Police Service who meet the re-enlistment requirements.
Former members must have previously been appointed in terms of the South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995 at one of the following ranks:
- Constable
- Sergeant
- Warrant Officer
Applicants must also have successfully completed basic police training and relevant functional police training courses where applicable.
Minimum Requirements
Former SAPS members applying for these positions must:
- Have previously served in SAPS as a Constable, Sergeant or Warrant Officer
- Have successfully completed basic police training
- Have completed relevant functional police training where applicable
- Have maintained a good disciplinary and attendance record during previous SAPS employment
- Have at least a Grade 12/Senior Certificate or higher qualification
- Have at least a valid Code B driver’s licence
- Be a South African citizen and provide documentary proof
- Be proficient in at least two official languages, one of which must be English
- Be prepared to undergo a medical examination
- Undergo the required psychological/psychometric assessment and meet the profile of a police official
- Have no tattoo marks visible when wearing SAPS uniform
- Have no previous criminal convictions
- Have no pending criminal or disciplinary cases
- Allow fingerprints to be taken and background enquiries to be conducted
- Not have been declared unfit to possess a firearm
- Be prepared to be deployed according to the needs of SAPS
- Be prepared to relocate at their own expense where required
- Be prepared to accept a post away from their current residence where reasonable travelling may be necessary
- Not participate in a business or activity that creates a conflict of interest with the integrity of SAPS
- Be willing to undergo refresher training or other training determined by the National Commissioner
Age Requirement
Applicants must not be older than 55 years of age on 15 September 2026, the closing date of the advertisement.
Medical and Psychometric Assessments
Applicants must undergo the assessments determined by the National Commissioner.
This includes:
- Psychometric/psychological assessment
- Medical examination
- Risk and suitability assessments where applicable
Candidates must be found to meet the required profile of a police official and be declared fit for employment by the Health Risk Manager on the day of the medical assessment.
Detective Training
Successful applicants who do not have detective experience or formal detective training will undergo:
Three months of training immediately after appointment.
Applicants should therefore be prepared to complete the required training before fully performing the relevant Detective Services functions.
Who Will NOT Be Considered for Re-Enlistment?
Applications will not be considered from former SAPS members who left the Service under certain circumstances, including those who:
- Reached retirement age, whether through early or compulsory retirement
- Were dishonourably discharged or dismissed
- Left SAPS while disciplinary proceedings or criminal proceedings were still pending
- Left the Public Service with a severance package
- Left SAPS because of ill health, medical boarding or retirement on medical grounds
Vetting and Background Checks
Shortlisted and successful applicants may undergo extensive screening.
This includes:
- Fingerprint screening
- Criminal-record checks
- Reference checks
- Qualification verification
- Driver’s licence verification
- Residential-address verification
- Personal interviews
- Practical assessments where applicable
- Medical assessment
- Psychometric assessment
Successful applicants may also be vetted against the relevant registers under the Children’s Act, 2005 and the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007.
A candidate whose particulars appear in the applicable National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register may be disqualified from appointment to the relevant post.
Candidates are also expected to disclose whether they are respondents in an interim or final protection order under the Domestic Violence Act, 1998 or the Protection from Harassment Act, 2011. This may affect appointment.
