Job Opportunity
Transnet Freight Rail is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Trainee Train Assistant based in Postmasburg, Northern Cape.
This opportunity is ideal for young South Africans who have completed Grade 12 with Mathematics and/or Physical Science and are interested in building a long-term career in South Africa’s rail transport industry.
Successful candidates will receive theoretical and practical training to become certified Train Assistants.
Overview
The Trainee Train Assistant will assist Train Drivers in the safe and efficient operation of freight and passenger trains.
The role involves locomotive preparation, train inspections, shunting operations, communication support, safety compliance, and assisting with train operations during journeys.
The successful candidate will undergo extensive training and must successfully complete all required assessments to qualify as an independent Train Assistant.
Key Responsibilities
Locomotive Preparation
โข Sign on duty and receive work allocations
โข Prepare locomotives for operation
โข Obtain and place required equipment on locomotives
โข Assist with locomotive start-up procedures
โข Conduct locomotive brake tests
โข Couple locomotives where required
โข Clean working areas and equipment
Train Preparation
โข Conduct pre-trip inspections
โข Perform train examinations
โข Prepare vehicle lists and operational documentation
โข Mount train indicators and telemeters where necessary
โข Conduct brake tests with the Train Driver
Communication Support
โข Obtain radios, handsets and communication equipment
โข Ensure communication equipment is operational
โข Maintain communication during train operations
Shunting Operations
โข Perform shunting activities in sidings
โข Place and remove wagons as required
โข Update vehicle lists
โข Move loaded and empty wagons safely
Train Operations
โข Assist Train Drivers during journeys
โข Monitor signals and rail conditions
โข Observe train movements and operational safety
โข Protect trains during incidents and emergencies
โข Assist with emergency procedures
Administration
โข Complete train journals
โข Submit documentation after each shift
โข Assist with operational reporting requirements
Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements
โข Grade 12 / Matric
โข Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Age Requirements
โข Must be at least 21 years old to perform train operational duties
Physical Requirements
โข Minimum height of 1.6 metres
โข Physically fit
โข Good hearing ability
โข Good eyesight
โข Mentally fit
โข Ability to carry heavy objects
Medical Requirements
Applicants must successfully pass:

Experience Required?
No previous railway experience required.
Successful candidates will receive structured training through the Transnet Trainee Programme.

Preference
First preference will be given to applicants residing within the Northern Cape Province.
