Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

-A minimum ABET qualification.

No experience required.

-Ability to communicate effectively in English.

-Basic knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.

-Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

-Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

-Must be physically fit to perform food service and cleaning duties.

Added Advantages

For the Durban post, experience in the following will be beneficial:

  • Galley (kitchen) cleaning.
  • Venue preparation.
  • Operating cleaning equipment and machinery.
  • Housekeeping and hygiene practices.
  • Good interpersonal skills for interacting with clients.

For the Gordonโ€™s Bay post, previous experience in housekeeping or kitchen cleaning will be an added advantage.


Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will assist with maintaining high hygiene standards within Navy kitchens and dining facilities.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Cleaning the galley (kitchen) and kitchen equipment.
  • Keeping food stores and surrounding areas clean and hygienic.
  • Preparing dining halls before meals.
  • Cleaning and scrubbing kitchen and dining areas.
  • Clearing tables after meals.
  • Washing dishes, cutlery, pots and kitchen utensils.
  • Assisting with receiving, unloading and packing food supplies.
  • Assisting with setting up and clearing dining tables.
  • Supporting minor food and beverage preparation when required.
  • Performing other galley-related duties as instructed by supervisors.
