Job Overview
Ward Assistants play an important support role within hospital wards by assisting nursing staff with non-clinical duties. Successful candidates will help with food distribution, linen management, cleaning duties, transporting supplies, waste management, and ensuring that wards remain clean, organised, and functional.
Key Responsibilities
Successful applicants will be responsible for:
-Transporting food trolleys between the kitchen and hospital wards.
-Serving meals and refreshments to patients under the supervision of nursing staff.
-Returning food containers to the main kitchen.
-Washing dishes and maintaining cleanliness in ward kitchens.
-Damp-dusting ward furniture and equipment.
-Transporting unsterile equipment to CSSD.
-Collecting and packing sterile equipment from CSSD.
-Receiving, counting, and packing clean hospital linen.
-Sorting, counting, and packing dirty or soiled linen.
-Preparing and labelling linen bags for collection.
-Maintaining cleanliness in sluice rooms.
-Handling medical waste and replacing waste bags.
-Collecting medication and emergency stock from pharmacy and stores.
-Complying with Health Waste Management policies.
-Rotating between different wards when required.
-Following Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines at all times.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- NQF Level 1 or Level 2 qualification (ABET Level 4 Certificate or equivalent).
- Knowledge of Batho Pele Principles.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Physical fitness to meet the demands of the role.
- Honesty, reliability, and willingness to follow instructions.
- Ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
